Plan the Long Weekend
A Lake County Labor Day, from Market to Lakeshore
Labor Day weekend 2026 runs Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7, and Lake County has plenty to fill it. From the weekly Mentor Farmers Market to the sandy shores of Headlands Beach, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy the final days of summer close to home. As a lifelong Lake County resident, I love this stretch of the calendar: the lake is still warm, the crowds have thinned, and the community comes out to celebrate.
Whether you already live here or are touring homes over the long weekend, this guide points you to verified, local favorites. If you are house hunting at the same time, the Neighborhood Guides are a great starting point, and I can help you build a plan that fits your goals. The Mentor Farmers Market at Eleanor B. Garfield Park
Kick off the weekend at the Mentor Farmers Market, held Fridays from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Eleanor B. Garfield Park. The 2026 season runs from June 12 through September 18, so the market is open on Friday, September 4 of Labor Day weekend. It is a welcoming gathering spot with local produce, prepared food, and a community atmosphere that makes a great start to the long weekend. Check the City of Mentor Farmers Market page for the latest details.
Living near Eleanor B. Garfield Park is one of the reasons buyers often ask about this part of Mentor. If you are exploring the area, our Mentor Parks Guide rounds up the green spaces that make the city special, and the Mentor Real Estate guide covers the neighborhoods around them.
All Weekend
Lake Erie Beaches, Wetlands, and Trails
No Lake County summer weekend is complete without the lake. Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor is Ohio's largest natural sand beach and a favorite for a final summer swim, a sunset walk, or simply watching the waves. Nearby, the Mentor Marsh and Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve offer quiet trails through some of the region's most important wetland habitat.
If you would rather stay inland, the Lake Metroparks system maintains more than 60 miles of trails across 38 parks, ideal for hiking and biking as the leaves begin to turn. The Wildwood Cultural Center in Mentor is another local gem worth a visit. For a full rundown of the county's parks and outdoor recreation, our Lake County Parks Guide has you covered.
For buyers, this is also a perfect weekend to walk a neighborhood on foot and get a real feel for a community before the market picks back up in the fall. Our Buying Guide walks through the process step by step.

An Easy Day Trip: Geneva-on-the-Lake Labor Day Feast
If you are up for a short drive north along the lake, Geneva-on-the-Lake in neighboring Ashtabula County celebrates Labor Day with its annual Labor Day Feast on Monday, September 7: a crab-leg cookout, live music, and a fireworks show along the lakeshore. It is about a 30- to 40-minute drive from Mentor and makes a memorable way to close out the summer.
Lake County's own Headlands Birding Festival follows later in the month, September 18 through 20, if you want to keep the outdoor momentum going. More details are on the City of Mentor's festival announcement.
For sellers, the post-Labor Day stretch is a strong window to list, as buyers who enjoy the long weekend often get serious about a move before the holidays. Our Selling Guide and our pricing strategy guide explain how to get it right from day one.
