Mentor Schools November 2026 Levy: What It Means for Homeowners and Buyers

On November 3, 2026, Mentor voters will decide whether to approve a 5-year, 3.5-mill operating levy for the Mentor Exempted Village School District. This is a district-wide question with real consequences for current homeowners, and it is also a factor buyers weigh when choosing where to put down roots. Here is a clear, fact-based look at the levy, what it would cost, and what is at stake for the community and the local housing market.

What Is on the Ballot?

The levy on the November 3 general election ballot would generate approximately $9.6 million per year for the district's general operating budget. For homeowners, the cost works out to roughly $123 per year for every $100,000 of home value (about $10.25 a month on a $100,000 home). The Mentor school board approved placing the scaled-back 3.5-mill request on the ballot in July 2026, after passing a first resolution in June (The News-Herald).

This is the district's third operating levy attempt in 2026. A larger 4.9-mill levy was rejected on the May 5 primary ballot, and the district has already enacted about $6.6 million in budget reductions for the 2025-2026 school year, including staffing and program changes. District officials have said that another defeat could force an additional roughly $14.4 million in cuts across staffing, transportation, and programs (cleveland.com, The News-Herald).

Why Schools Matter to the Mentor Market

School districts are one of the most consistent drivers of housing demand, and Mentor's schools are a core part of the area's appeal. For many of the families I work with, especially those looking to upsize into a larger home, the quality and stability of the local district are top priorities alongside space, neighborhood, and commute. A well-funded, well-run district supports long-term property values, while uncertainty about district finances can make buyers more cautious.

That is why I watch district funding questions closely, not just as a community member but as a real estate professional. If you are comparing districts across Lake County, our Lake County School Districts Guide breaks down Mentor, Willoughby-Eastlake, Riverside, and more. The Broader Community Picture

The levy vote comes as the district manages its facilities and finances through a transitional stretch. In the first days of September 2026, Mentor Public Schools closed on Wednesday, September 2 due to an extreme-heat forecast, since most district buildings do not have air conditioning (Mentor Public Schools). The district also announced the departure of its chief financial officer, effective September 30, 2026. These details underscore the operational realities the district is navigating as it asks voters for additional operating funds.

Local school levies do not change how a home's value is appraised, but they do shape the community's fiscal health and, over time, its desirability. A district that is financially stable tends to support steady demand and consistent appreciation, which benefits homeowners who plan to stay and those who eventually sell.

What This Means if You Are Buying or Selling

Mentor's housing market remains a competitive seller's market. The median sale price is approximately $285,000 (Redfin, summer 2026), up 7.6% year-over-year, with homes averaging roughly 15 to 22 days on market and around 168 active listings. For buyers, the lesson is simple: understand the district's financial situation before you make an offer, just as you would research taxes and HOA fees. For sellers, the ongoing strength of Mentor's schools and neighborhoods is worth highlighting in your listing. Either way, I am happy to walk through what the levy and the broader market mean for your specific situation.
